How to Keep Insects Away from Your Outdoor Living Area

News

When the weather is nice, you might enjoy spending time entertaining or relaxing in your outdoor living space. However, one thing that can really put a damper on things is dealing with pests. Insects can be a major problem in any outdoor living space, but following a few tips can help.

Choose the Right Decking Material

An old wooden deck with rotting wood can attract bugs and other pests. To help prevent this problem and ensure that you end up with a deck that lasts for a long time, consider one that is made out of maintenance-free materials, such as the ones offered by NexGEN decking. Even if you do have a quality capped composite or aluminium deck, allowing leaf or other garden matter to build up on your deck gives insects a place to breed.

Keep it Clean

You probably sip on your favourite fruity and sweet drinks and barbeque out and eat in your outdoor living space. Just know that crumbs or spills can attract insects in a major way, so it’s a good idea to clean up spills as soon as they happen. The easiest way to do this is to keep your garden hose handy for a quick squirt. Once you’ve finished with the barbeque, scrape off any leftover food and apply a clean film of your cooking oil of choice to prevent surface rust.

Use Citronella

Citronella is great for repelling insects. You can light citronella candles when you are hanging out in your outdoor living area, or you can use tiki torches that are fuelled with citronella-rich fuel. A combination of both can help you really keep bugs away, and it can provide you with a nice atmosphere and a bit of extra lighting as well.
