CUSTOMER PROFILE

The Sebel Brisbane is a 160-room hotel built in 1999. Located on the 5^th floor, the pool area and function areas cover nearly 600m2 and were originally tiled. Over the years the tiling has cracked and discoloured and has generally become an eyesore. The cracked and broken tiles also potentially exposed the

waterproof membrane to damage and degradation. Management knew it was time for something durable that would not only last but would also look good for years to come.

CHALLENGES

Located in the heart of the CBD, near Eagle Street, Brisbane Casino and Queen Street Mall, The Sebel Brisbane is one of the city’s top hotels meaning that hours when work can be carried out is restricted due to noise disturbing guests. Adding to the challenges is the fact that the renovation is on the 5^th floor severely restricting site access and requiring road closures and cranes. Perhaps the biggest challenge however, was the cost to remove the existing tiles and re-waterproof the nearly 600m2 floor area was exorbitant.

The decision was made to deck over the top of the existing tiles without penetrating the waterproof membrane below. The next issue to overcome was that some doorways that opened up to the pool and outdoor function areas are very low profile and close to the ground meaning conventional sub-frames for decking would not work.

SOLUTIONS

The hotel started its research into composite decking and soon discovered that not all composites are created equal. They began looking closely at the different manufacturing processes and warranties and found that NexGEN Capped Composite Decking offered much more than other commercial decking composites.

Multiple quotes were sought for the refurbishment work and when tabled for consideration by the Body Corporate Committee and Hotel Management. RESULTS

Fiberon Acorn Capped Composite Decking was installed using NexGEN’s DeckCell product. The system allows the decking to “float” on top of the tiles with zero penetration of the membrane beneath.

The speed of installation using the DeckCell product meant the project was completed on time and on budget with minimal disruption to the hotel guests.
